Parker, McGraw-Hill, Hamburg, 1984, D M 285.00 (xxiv + 2065 pages) I S B N 0-07-045482-5 From time to time most of us find ourselves in need of a brief description of a scientific or technological word or expression. The description should be m o r e explanatory than a line in a dictionary but no m o r e than about half a page.

This concise ency-clopedia answers the need well. It has been carefully p r e p a r e d by extracting the essential text of the entries of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (15 volumes).

There are 7300 entries in 2065 large-format, two-column pages. Each article usually begins with a definition followed by the essential information about the subject. The length of each entry is sensibly in proportion to its relative importance. Examples of entries at r a n d o m are:aardvark, botany, chemical ecology, decapoda (crustacea), electronic display, halogenation, infrared spectroscopy, lingulida, optimization, polypodiales, quality control, sense organ, strontianite, urethane, volcano, well logging, and zythiaceae. The volume contains 1600 line drawings and photographs, as well as m a n y tables, to supplement the text of the articles as necessary. The quality of the entries is sound, as may be expected since they were written by authorities in their fields. Most of the nearly 3000 contributors are from the U.

A., but there are a several from other countries particularly those of Western Europe. The printing of the volume is clear and attractive. There are a n u m b e r of appendices and a subject index of 30 000 entries.

The b o o k is good value for the m o n e y and should be among the basic reference works available to all those concerned with science and technology.A.B. DEMPSTERCopyright and Copying Information Trends in Analytical Chemistry 0165-9936/86/$02. O0 All rights reserved.
